SunTrust Mortgage has been providing home loans since
the end of the Civil War, well over 140 years ago. Some recent
highlights:
- Our modern-day holding company, SunTrust Banks, Inc., was created
in 1985, when Trust Company of Georgia merged with Florida’s SunBank to
form the first regional bank holding company in the Southeast under new
interstate banking laws.
- In 1986, SunTrust expanded through acquisition of the Third
National Corporation of Nashville, Tennessee.
- When SunTrust acquired Crestar Financial Corporation of Richmond,
Virginia, in 1998, SunTrust Mortgage was created from the merger of the
former Crestar Mortgage Corporation with SunTrust’s first-mortgage
residential lending company.
- In 2001, SunTrust acquired the Florida banking franchise of
Huntington Bancshares, Inc., enhancing our position in key growth
markets.
- SunTrust acquired National Commerce Finance Corporation in 2004,
expanding the company's footprint in high-growth markets including North
Carolina, South Carolina, and Memphis.
Today, SunTrust Mortgage is among the top 20 mortgage
originators and servicers in the U.S., serving virtually every state as
well as the District of Columbia. In this extensive market area, we work
with a number of
business partners to grow our sales.
